She had it for over a year and then 1 day she calls me to say her VCR quit again. Huh? After she told me she was using her VCR "just in case". She admitted she was not using the DVR to record, so I had my friend, who worked for Cox Cable, change her back to her old system. I think it was $20 a month more when she had the DVR, but since she wasn't even using it? Not worth having it or my paying for it.
Maybe the OP will upgrade the rest of their video system since they said that they do have a Smart TV, there is still hope.
@hckynut(john),
I laughed my bu** off when I read this!!! Your late MIL is my kind of peeps. I guess I am 4+ stubborn just like I've been told
My condolences to you and your DW, BTW.

I threw out my VCR years ago, but I had close to 30 VHS tapes I held onto up until a couple yrs ago. My late, sweet sissy would record movies for me...so those tapes had lovely memories of our times together. But I knew even though I threw out the tapes, the memories would still be there.
Giggle.
Did her recorder have the 12:00 flashing for a while? 😝
If so, I'm sure you fixed, yes?
This is probably my 5th VCR I've purchased over the years. I, like you, have so many fond memories about seeing films that I've collected, now in VHS, with my departed loved ones. I never did have the flashing 12:00, actually. I was an expert on those VCRs, probably because I was just a kid with a lot more patience when they first came out.

@chickenbutt wrote:Might be time to get either a DVD recorder or a Tivo, or generic type DVR for recording/viewing. Aside from more current technology, it will be a lot easier, especially with a Tivo/DVR, to record and not have to worry about the tape getting full.
CB,
I'm ready to do this, but I do have an expansive VHS collection. Just having a hard time giving them up.

That would be nice, @gardenman. The market drives innovation so I guess not many people are interested in rewatching old movies. Old movies are the only ones worth watching, IMHO.

Have you tried finding a VCR on eBay or Craig's List?
You might haunt your local Goodwill/Salvation Army stores.
Or even drive by a yard sale or 2.
Not that I'm saying, but...most people would probably
just give their old VCR to you...no charge!
Ask some of your friends. I bet someone has one
up in their attic or basement. Good luck!

A little Googling has revealed that one manufacturer (LG) came out with HDTV's with DVR's back in 2007, but they quickly disappeared. These were plasma HDTV's. I'm not sure why no one else has done it though. It's not a very complicated thing to do.

If you want a VHS Player so you can play all your tapes, and copy them to a DVD, you might consider the following.
You can buy a VHS Player to play your expansive VHS collection, and instead of "giving them up"? There are several cheap devices you can buy to transfer your VHS tapes to DVD. That way you can save them/toss the tapes, and the DVD'S will last decades.
You only need 3 composite(RCA) cables, which come with the devices to do this. You can go to the walmart dot com website and buy a VHS Player. They ship free to a store near you.
The "TO DVD TRANSFER devices" are different prices, shop online as most of them do the job. If you value your "expansive tape collection", this is an option. You do not have to be a "techie" to do this.
Fact, I will walk you through the process, step by step, if you want to do this. This IS NOT A VHS RECORDER, IT IS A PLAYER ONLY. You have to be able to play them to record them onto a DVD.
I'm out now,
