my MacBook Pro and my camera don't communicate

I fully recognize that it's probably operator error, as a techie I most certainly am not {#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}. my MacBook Pro doesn't appear to recognize my camera when I connect it to the port to transfer photos.

is the Mac just not comaptible with some brands of cameras, or have I done something wrong? I probably need to take it to an Apple store for help, but thought I'd ask for general opinions here first.
