Mindy is correct, there's a "keyboard key"

(looks like a tiny keyboard with an arrow pointing down),

 

iPadKeyboardKey

and a tap will hide the virtual keyboard,

and another tap on the screen will bring it back for you.

 

I also wanted to add another method.

On the iPad and the iPhone, if you'll just touch the screen at the very top of the virtual keyboard and slide/swipe down, that also removes it.   

This is helpful when the keyboard doesn't display the "keyboard key."   

Again, another tap on the screen will return the keyboard to you.😊

I'll pass it on.  This was for a friend of mine who only has an iPhone and an iPad.  I know to do that and I can't remember if the down keyboard icon was visable or not.
