iPhone Texting quandary. (Updated!)

[ Edited ]

I have an iPhone 7.  My friend has an iPhone 9.  When she sends me a text, I don't get any tone signal.  I get the text, but no notification tone.  I get the tone from others, but don't get it from this one person.  Anybody have any thoughts? It's a fairly recent problem.  Started maybe a month or two ago.

My only thoughts are -  did you check if “do not disturb” is possibly turned on for just that contact?  Have you tried powering off your phone and then turning it back on since this happened?  (I normally don’t turn my phone all the way off and sometimes I’ve found it helps to do so if there is something weird going on).

Under messages, are you filtering unknowns?

Have filter options showing up in messages?

Is her number in contacts?

Have you tried setting a tone just for her alone as a test?

Sounds like your other notifications are coming through.

My brain is now drained 🤔

Thanks folks.  I've tried most everything.  The bizarre thing is that I'm thinking there might be a couple of other business texts that don't give me a tone (such as USPS).  Yet, I do get the tone from others.  Very strange.  Makes me think that it's time to start considering a new phone.  Problem is, I love this phone!

I just got a new iPhone and haven't noticed that so far on it.  But I did have that happen to me occasionally on my 6S+.

When it first happened, I just thought I hadn't been listening.  But then I realized that for some contacts, no sound was coming through.  I also tried everything and it didn't make any difference.  But I did notice that every once in a while I would get the usual sound.  I never could figure it out, and it eventually corrected itself.  I think it may have had something to do with certain updates, but I can't say for sure.

I also was thinking it has something to do with updates,...

@geezerette  I also was thinking it has something to do with updates, but for the fact that I get the tone from some texts, but not others.  Oh well, I think I'll just have to live with this.  Very weird.

have you tried going to your provider and have them walk you through some steps to check out your settings?

@Krimpette

That was what was confusing to me too.  Although I did also consider it may have been on the sender's end.  I will say that sometimes the tone on some texts also was distorted sometimes, like static that radio broadcasts can have.

I still don't know what caused it, but I just kept a little closer watch on my phone for a while when it was happening.  Hope yours clears up soon!🤞

@sunshine45  (And all the others who were so kind with your suggestions.  I finally decided to call Apple and even though she had to research a bit, she found the problem.

Here were the steps she did when she shared my phone:  Went into a recent message from my friend, then clicked on my friend's name, then clicked on "info".  Under that, there's a toggle for "hide alerts".  I had that selected.  Needless to say, I now have it turned off.  Can't reach my friend just now to test, but it sure makes sense that that would be the issue.

The Apple tech was awesome!  However, she had to admit that she had no idea how I could have managed to toggle that button in the first place.

Thanks again everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Krimpette   That's interesting how she figured out why that was happening.  I think I don't always get an alert when a text is sent to me.  I'll start checking it that way.
