iPad mail question

On my MacPro I can send mail to my spam folder or delete it without opening the content of the mail first . But on my iPad I have to tap the screen to open the mail before I can move or delete it. I have Googled this and found confusing, conflicting information, so I'm asking iPad users here . Any tips?
