You can sync the ipad manually over the USB cord to a desktop. I have an app that requires me to do that to sync the files with my desktop version. It won't sync over the cloud.

You don't need a 2 year contract. You can enable 4G then cancel as you no longer need it.
It depends on the wireless company. This is information about Verizon
I have Verizon and it's month to month. The only people I know who have 3/4 G with a contract, bought the iPad that way for a lesser price or it's their only internet service.

Thanks all. My next stop will be the Apple Store. I went to Best Buy this afternoon, but I guess they were all too busy to wait on me. That's OK. I think I'd rather go to Apple anyway.

You will get better service and from people that know the products inside out at the Apple store.

Yes, I checked you can buy a Pay as you go plan. I use my smartphone while on the road with VZW.
