Suddenly I can not use the search bar on top of screen to google anything or go on websites,  it just kicks me to the app page main screen on my IPad Air. I can click on apps and favorite places and get to QVC and other sites. But can't get anywhere else on Internet unless it is under my bookmarked sites. I tried switching from Google to Bing, but that didn't help. Can't check out Apple forums, so hoping someone here could help me out. Thank you, Susi

Re: iPad Safari Problem

[ Edited ]

@Susic, Have you tried some basic "housekeeping" steps on  your iPad?

1.  Be sure you have the most recent version of iOS.

(Right now, that's 9.2.1 -- just go into Settings, choose "General," and then tap "About" to see the "Version.")

2.  Close the multi-tasking apps running in the background.

(Double-tap the Home button to see recently used apps and then swipe each one up to close all the apps.)

3.  Clear cookies, cache and website data in Safari.

(Go to Settings, then choose Safari, then choose "Clear History and Website Data" and tap "Clear" when you see the popup.  Then, choose Safari, "Advanced," "Website Data," and clear all that out.)

4.  Try a simple “Restart:”
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.

5.  Try a “Hard Reset:”
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for about eight seconds. This will force the iPad to turn off, even if it's frozen.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button to turn the iPad back on. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few moments. The iPad will turn back on and display the Apple logo.

6.   If you still have problems, perform a sync/backup of your iPad (either with iTunes on your computer or on the iCloud -- whatever you normally do).  This should be done frequently, and not only does it ensure you have a good backup it also frees up space on your iPad and can clear up a myriad of software glitches.

I hope some of this might do the trick!  Sometimes there's just an odd glitch resident on the device, and one or more of these things clears it up.

Best of luck to you!

If it just happened today it sounds like it was a safari glitch.  Here is what I read:

"go into Settings, tap Safari, and toggle off the ‘Safari Suggestions’ switch. This will fix the crashing, obviously its only a temporary fix until Apple sorts its servers out as it will disable the Safari Suggestions functionality."

Hope this helps...in the meantime I will continue to see if I find something different.

Re: iPad Safari Problem

Although Apple says this bug has been cleared up, I wanted to add this, too:

Apple's Safari Browser Crashes Around The World

"The issue appears to be related to the browser's search suggestions feature, but there is a temporary fix available.

Apple's Safari browser suddenly crashed on iPhones, iPads and Macs worldwide on Wednesday.

Launching a new tab in the web browser then trying to type into the address bar crashed the built-in browser for some users, sending them back to the device's home screen.

People around the world have posted messages to Twitter, Reddit and Apple forums complaining about the problem.

The issue appeared to be related to the browser's search suggestions feature, and

a temporary fix involved going into the settings menu to turn off Safari suggestions.

Not all phones and computers appear to have been affected by the bug. It is unclear whether the problem was related to an update for iOS which was released earlier this week."

Hi, thank you for your detailed reply! Will attempt this. I was able to click on apple support icon, and apparently others are having this problem today. If it doesn't resolve by tomorrow, will try all the hints you gave me. I don't usually tamper with the settings too much out of fear! My husband's iPad is fine. We both downloaded the latest update last week. Thanks again for your advice! Susi.

This is what I've read if it still isn't working now that they say it's been fixed:

"Apple has confirmed the issue is now fixed.

Some iOS users could continue to experience the same problems, but that's down to your smartphone's cache.

To clear cache in your Safari browser, head to Settings > Safari then tap Clear History and Website Data"

I had this problem on my iMac early this morning for a few hours. I went out and ran a few errands, came home and was getting ready to call Apple and I tried typing in the address bar again before I called and it was fixed.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?
