I've been working on creating Photobooks of my vacations. To make a long story short, I wanted to continue a project on my Macbook Pro after sitting for hours at the desktop. I got an error message I didn't have enough disk space to import a bunch of photos from my flash drive. Since it isn't my main computer I was surprised to find my 250 GB SSD hard drive was almost full. I deleted all of the photos from iPhoto and there was no change in the amount of free space. I finally decided to check the Photo program and there was my answer. I had duplicates of all of the photos taking up over 100 GB of hard drive space. Since the hard drive in my Macbook only has 250 GB of space, this was significant. I deleted all of the photos, emptied the trash from both programs, the trash you find on the dock and I got my free hard drive space back.
I went in and uncheck iCloud setting for sharing photos. Before anyone comments about my using iPhotos, I like it better. I can organize the way I like and it's easier for me to work with my pictures. I just wanted to let people know, if you have multiple computers and one has a small hard drive, you might want to rethink iCloud photo shariing and sharing between iPhoto and Photo.

Good point! I'm a fellow Mac user. You said it very well - the sharing can be used in different ways but not always to our benefit unless we know how.
I personally find all the sharing to be a bit of a PIA between two iPhones and two Macs in the same house. I have found lots of ways to circumvent things but then I forget how I did it. Oh well. It's all working the way I want it to (right now).
But that's one of the many reasons I like Macs. The intuitivity. I got really got put off by all of the hard angles and technical jargon of our last PCs.

It's one of the few things I DON'T like about Apple devices. Sharing everything with every device should not be automatically set. I thought I had turned it off and have no idea how it got enabled again. This is especially true of photos because of the amount of storage they need. The same thing happened with the Bluetooth settings on my phone. I turned it off then when I started having battery issues, I checked and it was enabled again! Grrrrr.

Yep. I brought DHs old iMac up by years of OS(s) - talk about a way back machine and changes, and he's never had an iTunes account, and home sharing used to be, well, "home sharing", and the cloud didn't exist but now does, but I had tunes on the old machine since it still burns CDs and yes, I still have a vehicle with a CD player . . .
I have learned very much!

You can choose to store in the cloud and delete the original off your device. That automatically saves space. But I don't use iphoto anymore. I use the current photos app. My documents and photos ect are all in the cloud stored there, very little is on my other devices although I have time machine backups too.
I cloud photo sharing does not automatically put a physical copy on your other devices.

Whatever it's called, my devices are sharing with each other putting duplicate photos on each device and I don't want it. I don't need to have everything stored on my iMac shared with any other device unless I want it done. I wish there was a way to uninstall or delete Photos. I don't like it, don't use it and no matter what setting I use, it seems to revert back to dupicating photos have in iPhotos taking up hard drive space.
