Unfortunately, about anything that can be transmitted via air waves/satellite/cell towers etc., at some point there is a risk of it being found by some that use their skills to do questionable or bad things.

Don't know if this is in reference to the celebrities "scantily attired pix" or not. I will say that many of the things most people use the new technology is by choice. For storing certain things I see as questionably, at best, probably should not be put in/up if not necessary.

Everyone is subject to be hacked and as the saying goes, "it may not be if, but when"!

I know this, hckynut . . . all I'm saying is why upload all of your personal data deliberately? I concede that doesn't mean one is "safe," by any means. If you're on the Internet in any capacity, you can be hacked. I'm on Facebook, AOL, and all of my banking is done online. I realize how safe that is not.

Ford1224,

I am agreeing with you.

I know. Smile

My IT/Networking son didn't from the moment it was introduced and warned us to keep everything we hold dear off it. We did better than that and never used it at all..... boy now I'm sure glad we listened to him.

I am so cyber paranoid, that I NEVER, EVER enter personal info on my comp much less pay bills or purchase anything using a cc. I pay all my bills by money order or checks using snail mail. Banking - I walk into my bank to conduct business. The only thing I have to worry about is the bank getting robbed. {#emotions_dlg.glare}

Not a member of FB either. Family & OFFLINE friends that live at a distance, we visit, call, iChat, Skype or snail mail each other.

It pays to be cyber paranoid. {#emotions_dlg.lol}

Well, you see, I have this problem. I need a wheelchair to get around . . . including the mailbox. And I have to rely on others to wheel me around since it's not a self-propelled wheelchair.

It appears you are more fortunate.

Sorry to hear that. Since you need the "net" I strongly suggest when using a cc or any website that has your personal info to make sure a padlock appears in the browser address bar. The padlock is suppose to signify that the website is secured.

I am relying upon my bank to cover anything I could lose in a hacking of their accounts. That's their pledge to their customers. As for Facebook and AOL, I couldn't care less what someone would want to "hack" from those sites. But thanks for the warning.

It'll be interesting to see if it really was weak passwords or some other issue that led to this problem. I'm suspicious that a key logger might have made it past the Apple software police and into an app sold through the Apple store. There are a lot of people with a lot of photos all being released at the same time for it to be the work of a lucky guesser/methodical hacker. Maybe he/she waited until they had a pile of data accumulated and then released it all at once, but my gut says this is something bigger than a few bad passwords.

If I'm Apple I'd be looking at the software on the phones/tablets of the victims and looking for any common apps and double-checking them to be sure they're not corrupted. The bad guys have gotten very clever at sneaking in malware and this feels more like a widespread issue than a few bad passwords. It could even have been a bad Apple employee in an LA Apple store who managed to plant a key logger into their devices. I'm guessing there's a store in that area that deals with many celebrities and their phones/tablets and given a few minutes of un-monitored access they could install some malware that would forward passwords to them. I'm pretty sure this isn't going to be some crazed fan in Dubuque who guessed right on a few passwords.

One thing's for sure, it's not good publicity for Apple just before their new product launch press conference.

I'm glad you're pleased with your PCs. However, some of that comes from being as tech-savvy as you are.{#emotions_dlg.thumbup1} They require a ton of work and diligence Apple devices don't require ... but that's another topic, for sure. I'm equally fond of my Apple products, have been for a long, long time, home office and business. I'm also equally happy we all have a choice.Wink

Wozniak had long-since retired from Apple and wasn't a part of the iCloud development. Too bad he wasn't there, he might've talked some sense into them.

Well, Apple wasn't even around when I started using an IBM two floppy drives PC, where one had to insert the 5-1/4" system disk in one slot and the data disk in the other, LOL!! I admit I "grew up" with DOS and PCs, and later Windows, and never learned anything about Macintoshes when they came out.

My youngest daughter is a Mac user and she's tried over the years to convert me, but I've never taken the bait. I don't know which product is better . . . certainly the world sees Apple products as the best, so I assume they are.

As you said, it's what one is used to. I hardly ever have problems with my computers because I know the basics so well, I'm careful, I never "leave the front door open," so to speak. I admit, I do hate Windows 8 and 8.1 with a passion though, and can't wait until the next (hopefully better) version comes out.

BTW, I heard Apple isn't going to offer the iPad 9 next, but skip to a newer technology. Have you heard that?

When you say "iPad 9" do you refer to iOS 9? iOS 8 is on the verge of release, but there's no way to predict the versions to follow for existing iPads.

There definitely will be the usual software updates and support cycles for iPads in use now. There has been chatter about something being referred to as the "iPad Pro" with a 12.9-inch screen, but I've seen nothing other than rumors so far. Perhaps that's what you've heard about.

Hi, Kzeks! I'm sorry your daughter's computer was hacked. However, I'm not sure how that fits into this discussion. We're not saying Apple devices are invulnerable. If you look back you'll see, on other threads on the topic, most of us have repeatedly explained over the years about the possible (though limited) vulnerability of Apple computers*. But I don't think there's a device or software in existence (or ever will be) that "can't be hacked." Anyone who thinks that has been sorely misled.

(*I believe this is the most recent one: Best protection for antivirus/malware for MacBook Air)

See how smart I am about Apple products? NOT!! All I know is that something that was expected to be released very soon is not going to be released because they are working on something better. I read it somewhere. {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

Ford, Here's one of the recent reports I read in an e-newsletter but some of it's really iffy, in my opinion:

Larger 12.9" iPad Pro Slated for Early 2015 Release

Link goes to: http://www.padgadget.com/2014/08/26/larger-12-9-ipad-pro-slated-for-early-2015-release/
