i'm having high CPU usage with IE8

My laptop is freezing occasionally ( especially here!) and it's slow sometimes- I don't store anything ( like pictures) I don't play games- mostly used for e-mail and news. Not much added software either- and nothing new added for well over a year- any suggestions why this is happening? I replaced the battery and the ac adapter over a year ago too. I don't download anything other than important updates.
