how long do you keep a computer?

I have a Toshiba laptop that I have had for a year and a half. I have had nothing but trouble since I have gotten it. Right now I'm using a borrowed computer because mine is at Best Buy being fixed. They will have for about a month and may have to send it to Kentucky to be repaired. My niece thinks you should get a new computer every two years. What do you think? Also anyone happy with their computer and can tell me which brand is good? TIA!
