external hard drive question

I am looking into an external hardrive I need extra space 4 games music ect I am seeing alot of haed drives with back up software built in to them as well I dont neccerly need the back up soft ware as I have a cliickfree 4 that purpose my question is can u still run programes off of that type any recomendations on external hard drives would be helpful
