external HD. a few questions

ok, looking into external HD for back ups. (I know, I know) should have done this long ago. but not very tech/computer savvy. I have been researching plus read what I could find here. my questions

1) portable or desktop. I would not be taking anywhere. any difference other than size?

2) power adaptor or just USB power

a) I only have 4 usb ports and from reading, some folks do not get enough power from front ports? true??

3) looking at a WD 1.5T for $79. any opinions

will also be backing up to DVD, flash drives and maybe online (if free). I know carbonite is good but $ is a factor right now
