can you suggest computer for 7 year old?

My 7 year old grandson wants a computer for Christmas. Can someone suggest one that is good?He plays on his fathers ipad,granddads nook, but wants a computer. I guess he will probaby play games mostly. I looked at one at staples last hanksgiving that was a special buy. They had it for 400,but said it probably wasnt good for games.they wanted to show something else, but I left. DOES it take a special kind to play and download games and aps?I know nothing about a computer ecept to look at email and qvc.I want to get him one, but cannot spend 1000 on it. I am retired, and need to watch it. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.
