Wipe out from iPhone

My brother-in-law had all of his computer passwords wiped out apparently -- well ALL passwords in his computer, when syncing his iPhone. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing happening? If so, do you know of any "fixes" for this situation? Or do you know how such a thing can be prevented? Thanks in advance -- ~loves~
