Windows Live, Help Needed

I have downloaded Windows Live, I also have a Hotmail account. Are these the same, I guess, what I'm asking, is Hotmail, considered the Windows Live, mail? Or do I need to download something else? I can't seem, to find the answer, on the Windows Live, homepage.
