Windows Defender

As I am not very computer savy, would appreciate any help offered!


I have Windows 7 with Kaspersky Antivirus 2012 installed. Now after 2 years of owning this computer, noticed (after a definition update failed) that Windows Defender is also installed and running.

Do I need both these? Is there any harm in running both? Is one better than the other?
