Re: Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade. Should I do it?

DH has put Win 10 on about 10 computers so far with no problems. I'm still using Windows Live Mail & still using IE11 or Chrome just as I did before. It's not much different if you ask me. My desktop still looks the same with all my folders. Our homepage online DH made with links we use is still the same. I have not looked at the Edge Browser yet. DH has used it a few times. He said it seems faster.

Before you start make sure have a backup & a good restore point.

Dh had to get a virus off my sister's laptop & install updates before he could install Win 10 on hers so it took longer.

Allegedly and IMO, and the opinions of many others: Regarding W10 recently and aggressively installing W10 without our permission, causing our computers to be inoperable, and/or very slow, and/or emails totally unavailable. It's a sick, sick time in history when a company ignores customers' wishes.  If we don't want to update to Windows 10 for whatever reasons, they should listen to us.  Very brazen, imo.  And, if one company/industry gets away with it, guess what: other industries will follow.  Companies just won't care what we want or don't want.  It's just a matter of time.  You couldn't pay me enough money to ever buy a MS product.  And lots of folks around here are saying the same.  Of course, we're the type of people who don't like our lives being taken over without our permission.  Others obviously don't care.

Re: Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade. Should I do it?

Got a brantic call from hubby downstairs just a few minutes ago. I was up in the bedroom.  He told me the computer was automatically updating and he did nothing to make it happen.  I ran down and luckily I was able to stop the transition.

No I am not in favor of going to Windows 10.  When I did it on my computer I had to take it off.  I really don't  want to be in airplane mode without Internet connection.  And his Windows 7 programs probably would not work and I would be up all night trying to get it all back to normal.

The nerve of Microsoft.  Didn't even ask him.  He only went downstairs to get me papers off the printer.  Had I not printed something from upstairs it would have been a very late night into early  morning.

Someone here mentioned that she and her hubby have Google Chrome books.  I took a look at several sites, and a site called ........ Drats!  Somebody must have thrown out my index card.........When I find it, I'll post.   Anyway, there are quite a few Chrome Books, and I'm seriously thinking about buying one.  Very fast (seconds), and lots of other features.  As I recall, Google updates without all of the commotion that MS and Windows has.  Lots of 'pluses', it seems to me.

p.s. and I'm back.  Luckily I had the article emailed to my other account.  (Still haven't been able to get into my emails on my main provider account, but that's another story.  Just missing out on clicking on links, getting emails from various bloggers, etc., etc.  It was fun, but now that I'm getting used to it, I'm glad that I'm not addicted, lol.  Also, it makes me feel good that lots of money is probably being lost because many of us aren't able to click onto the various sites which make $$$$ each time we click onto a link. They can blame it on MS W10 !!.)    Well, back to the Chromebook site.  The title of the article is "What is a Chromebook, anyway?"  It's on the Digital Trends site.   ............  Also, I might mention that I don't use my laptop for any type of business or college or anything important.  Just to Web search, and enjoy various style bloggers, store newsletters, and of course, being here on the threads.  So, possibly a Google (or other brand) Chrome Book will be ideal for me.  'Fast and simple' browsing is my new motto.  Everyone here have a pleasant and thought provoking July Fourth.  And remember the definition of the word 'Independence'.  Being independent from others (including countries, companies, etc.) and 'We the people' deciding what's best for ourselves, and not having decisions made by anybody else, somewhere else.  Heart

I thought you would have a period of time to up grade for free. After that it is a charge over 100.00.

I reserved for the upgrade; when my time came up it was upgraded and I have not had any problems.  I also purchased a laptop for a member of the family with W10. You will be happy.

Re: Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade. Should I do it?

As per the LifeCycle chart on Microsoft's website, the mainstream support for Windows 7 ended in 2013 and the extended support ends in mid January 2020.  What this means is that starting in 2013 performance updates ended but security updates will continue until 2020.

There are three laptops and a desktop in my household.  Realizing that the free update to Windows 10 period is getting ready to end, I decided to update all it f them.  First, make sure all the Windows 7 required updates are installed.  If this is not done, the process which takes almost all day will fail.  The three laptops went fine with just a few adjustments needed afterwards.  After a few attempts, I discovered the desktop can not be updated without first reinstalling Windows 7.  This is because there is a hidden device communication error between an HP printer and the Dell desktop.

The bottom line is Windows 10 has more capabilities and has the mainstream support.  However, if don't need all the latest bells and whistles and Windows 7 is working fine (as in my desktop), you can stick with it until the extended support ends.  Then buy a new one.

Re: Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade. Should I do it?

I just got my new Win10 laptop and am getting it going.  The first thing I noticed about Win10 is that it sure does try to get you to relieve yourself of ANY privacy.

I hope that, going through the initial steps to get going, people notice the choice (bottom LEFT) to customize things and don't just enter through.

There were pages and pages of stuff that was defaulted at 'on' where you share all kinds of personal information and leave it open to - well, who knows what!  I changed all of those to 'no' and also learned (from my earlier mistake) to enter through that thing that tries to get you to start a Microsoft 'account'.

But, otherwise, it's going well and still loading whatever all is going to be loaded.  Smiley Happy

BTW, this ASUS (my first of that brand) is really very attractive and seems to be pretty well made.

So far, so good but can't find control panel.
