It depends on how old it is and the components it has in it. That along with how full your hard drive might be, and how often you clean out unnecessary files etc.
Probably have to give us more info on this computer before anyone can help you much. I am sure others here will try to help you with this. I know my post won't help you much. Keep checking here.

Have you tried to run a pass from Malwarebytes? It's free and it might catch a lot of stuff you don't need.

Using Windows
Is it slow only when using the internet or slow all the time?
Run an anti-virus program first to rule that out. Do a complete scan.
Disk Clean
Defrag Hard Drive
Delete temporary files, cache, history, recycle bin.
Remove applications you don't use.
Clean out documents you no longer want.
How much Ram do you have? You might need more. Easy to install.
Problem with the hard drive.
Problem with the computer chip.

JMO, you can not make an old computer faster.
I will suggest two programs, CCleaner, and Malwarebytes. These two programs may help. They both have free versions.
You may want to consider buying a new tablet
I have been doing most things online with tablets and now a large smartphone.
I recommend starting with an Amazon Fire 10 tablet. This is a great device for the price.
Amazon sometimes has the 32GB device on sale for $99.
You do not have to be a Prime customer to use the tablet, but Prime members get deals and a five payment plan.
The company offers sales Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Prime Day in July. They may have a pop up sale anytime.
Another option, buy a 128GB iPad. Amazon has the best price on this product.
LOL, at some point I am going to move away from computers.

Save the data you don't want to lose and reset to factory specs. Once it's done doing all of the updates, you can put back the files you need. If you do a "backup" and you have malware on it, it will come back as well.
Install a program called CCleaner, install it, run it and delete what it finds. Go to tools then startup and disable everything but your antivirus, firewall and malware programs. I bet you'll find 20 different programs running in the background draining your computer's resources.

To some extent everything suggested will work a bit, but there are also limits. A lot depends on how old the computer is. There are times you just have to bite the bullet and upgrade. I get about seven years from each desktop before they need to be upgraded.
To see how much any of that will help, you can open Task Manager and keep that window open as you use the computer and watch and see what happens. At the top of Task Manager is a tab labeled Performance. If you click on that it'll let you see how stressed your computer is. I'm using an AMD FX 6300 six-core processor right now and it's puttering along at about 4%-22% as I meander around the Internet today. I'm not coming close to maxing it out despite multiple open windows and multiple open programs. It's averaging less than 10% usage of the CPU with an occasional spike upwards.
If your CPU usage is high, you can click on the Processes tab to see what's using the CPU. As I type this my big user at 1.4% (give or take a bit) is Microsoft Edge. (Even though I'm posting on Chrome right now.) You can see what's using all parts of your computer by using the Processes tab. If something is eating a lot of memory or CPU, you can see what it is in Task Manager. If it's not a vital process you can click on it and shut it down from that Task Manager also.
There are times when the only real option is to upgrade, but there are also times when something simple can bring back the speed you need. By using Task Manager you can see where the problem lies and that can give you a clue as to what you need to do to fix it. I had a weird issue with a plug-in on a web browser a few years back where it was eating 90+% of my CPU capacity. The only way I knew that was the problem was by using Task Manager. It was an easy fix once I found it, but finding it required Task Manager. To get to Task Manager you can simply right-click on a blank spot on the bar at the bottom of your screen. A menu of options should pop up and Task Manager will be one of those options. Click on it and you can see what's going on inside your computer. It's a very handy tool.
