It is Gen 9.
Gen 10 is already out. Gen 10 has a better camera, new chip, more RAM, bigger screen.

 

They probably got a good deal on the old technology.

He, he.  Made me check my iPads.  Got three floating around here for the grandkids.  Thought they were newish, but nope, gen 5.  A testament to durability.
