What is my printer doing?

I haven't used my printer for days, haven't even turned it on, but I hear it resetting itself (I think) several times a day even sometimes when my computer is off. What's it doing? Is it a problem? And can I stop it without unplugging it? (It's in my guestroom and I have company coming.) TIA Millie
