You click on a link and it stops you with an exclamation point within a yellow blob. You hold down the control key and click again and now it allows the link to open. What is this called?

I don't know what you're talking about. Is this on a Mac or a PC?

Hi depglass,
My first thought was that yellow is usually caution. It maybe your antivirus program warning you that the link is questionable and to proceed with caution or it could be something with which ever internet service you are using. Those are the two places I would check, there should be some sort symbol glossary.

I'd say it's a warning (the exclamation mark?) to indicate that it's not a secure site. You need to check out the help section for your anti-virus software.
