What happened to my computer volume???

One day I tried to watch one of those news videos & no sound! Went on to click on other videos on different sites & still no volume. I checked all the cables & they're all connected, mute is off, so now what? Anyone help? Thx I have vista/HP windows 8 ( I think,most likely)
