On android devices there are apps that claim to "clean" the device or to "boost" the device. What do those actually do? Should I install one on my chromebook and my phone?

I have the same questiion. About one year ago I installed a "clean" app
plus a boost app. I became inundated with popups thinking I had to get another app. I actually removed all of the "clean" "boost" apps. It's been fine except I am now getting notices again that I need to "clean" my phone. I'm not sure what to do: add those apps or do nothing.
Thank you for asking a good question.

The Play Store page for each app has a description of what it does. Many of them clear app caches and junk files, and change power settings to extend battery life. I don't use any, I don't see any need for them.

@Big Sister I added one called super speed clean and the pop up are driving me crazy. I's like to take it out but I can't find anywhere in my apps an icon so I can go to it to hit uninstall. It's very irritating.
My chromebook came with one called close & clean. You simply start it and it cleans all the cookies and cache then closes down the computer. I run it every night before I turn off the computer & go to bed. Never any ad or pop up from it.

Check to see if a toolbar called super speed clean has been installed. I once had a similar thing happen and when I removed the toolbar the problem was resolved.
I never install anything that claims to automatically clean your computer with no intervention on your part...and I try to research as thoroughly as possiible before using. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Shopping networks are notorious for distributing this kind of product; their demonstrations appear convincing but usually do nothing you can’t accomplish yourself with basic maintenance tools that come with your operating system.

Thank Goodness - I was able to look under applications in my settings and found it there . Uninstalled it.So glad to have it gone! Whatever good it did was absolutely off set by the constant pop ups.
