Re: What device for listening to books?

Is your "port" hole labeled AUX?  Yes if you can find a cable you can plug your device into it and play it though the car speakers.  Your CD player button is probably labeled CD/AUX.  Ask at Radio Shack or Frys

I did a google search for 2010 Toyota 4runner audio connections and got lots of pictures.

Oh you can also get a cigarette ligher adpator to  plug your device so it will run off the car battery and it will charge it up.  There's lot of kinds.  Does your deivce charging cord have a usb at the end?  Sometimes the end pulls out of the wall plug part and is a plain usb.  So you could get an adaptor like this to plug into the cigarett lighter

Re: What device for listening to books?

My apologies for not bringing this topic to conclusion. I figure I should add my resolution for anyone else seeking similar information.

I bought a cord from Amazon that has male prongs on both ends. One end goes into a phone or tablet port where headphones would plug in and the other end goes into the "aux" port in my car.  After getting the cord, and setting the audio system to aux, it still didn't work. But a friend helped me out,

I was using a cell phone to which I had downloaded a book while trying to master this technology. I had to increase the volume on the phone to its maximum. There is a separate volume control than the one that is used for phone conversations or ringing. I never knew there was such a thing.

With that volume control maxed, I was able to use the radio's volume control to regulate the sound in the car.

While I now understand how to use the audio system in the car, I still need to select a device to use. The phone would be great but not for me because I cannot use the phone inside my house. I don't get a cell signal in the house and if the phone is turned on, it goes through its battery in just a few hours because it's constantly trying to get a signal.

I wonder if there is a way to stop one of my old cell phones from being a phone.  Maybe if I remove the SIM card?

Re: What device for listening to books?

@JGalt  If your have no signal/poor signal, turn on "airplane mode" on your phone. Poor cell signal for me is the biggest/fastest battery drain.

I don't know what phone you have but I usually find my answers by googling "how to turn on airplane mode on ... (insert your phone model/make)"

(I actually have to google things like this.)

Re: What device for listening to books?

Well, I'll be...learn something every day! Thank you@Runner26.  I always thought airplane mode only cut off WiFi signal.  I had no idea it cut off cellular signals and Bluetooth also.  You have really given me something to work with.

When I'm out (and do want to be able to receive phone calls), I always turn on airplane mode so the phone won't pick up stray WiFi signals.  So it turns out I'm making my phone inaccessible.  I thought I was saving battery and enhancing security.

I do believe I have learned more on this Board over the past couple decades than anywhere else. Certainly this is true in the world of electronics. I must thank QVC for that.

Re: What device for listening to books?

@JGalt  I think the airplane mode only cuts out cellular signal. Bluetooth & wi-fi still works on airplane mode.

If your phone is just randomly trying to connect to open wi-fi, then there's a setting on your phone (on mine it's under wi-fi and I believe under 3 dots or advanced setting) where you uncheck something that reads "notify of open wi-fi" or something to that effect. I only connect to my own wi-fi so my phone doesn't try to automatically connect to open wi-fi.

Re: What device for listening to books?

@Runner26, I googled airplane mode and learned the business about calls and messaging as well as wifi, Bluetooth, and also gps being blocked. Apparently some phones (maybe iPhones?) have a way to turn some of the features back on individually.

I will check my wifi settings. Thanks.

Do you still have a cassett tape player in your car?  It's just a cassett with a cord on it to plug into your headphone jack on the tablet or your device.

You can get a cassett to aux adpater real cheap like at Frys or here's one from Amazon

I have an iPod Touch 5 and love it.  Before I got it I spent 3 days ripping my CDs to my computer so I could load them up to the iPod.  My iPod 5 is just like my iPad tablets and my husband's  iPhone.  I don't have a cell phone.    It's about the size of a cell phone.  I use it mostly as a music player but keep a lot of notes on it too.  Like all the sizes of things in my house (like the air filters and what kind of batteries things need) so if I'm in a store and remember I need to buy something I have the size.

My car has a cassette player and I use this to play my iPod Nano.

I'm buying a new car this year and will look forward to newer technology ;o)
