What are we doing wrong with our DVD player?

We hooked up a DVD player DD gave us and the movies stop and repeat at about 10 minutes in.  Our old player did the same thing.  Its happened with more than one disc.

It's old, you need a new one.  Same thing happened to me.  I chose not to replace mine between Netflix and Amazon Prime, I found I didn't need a DVD anymore.  Of course, I don't know what to do with all my old DVD's.

I did try cleaning it with a DVD cleaning disk but it didn't help!

Re: What are we doing wrong with our DVD player?

This is a longshot, but some older CD/DVD players had a repeat function where you'd press a button once to set the start point and a second time to set a stopping point and the player would simply play what was between those two points and nothing else. It's possible that at some point someone has inadvertently hit those two buttons on the remote and the player is doing what it thinks you want it to do. Try unplugging it for five minutes or so and plugging it back in and see if that helps.

And I also recommend try running a cleaning disc through a couple of times. Especially if using rental DVDs.

@depglass

I would start with going to the Home Menu and see what options are under "settings". I 1st however would do what gardenman suggested, resetting it. Many devices are fixed by a reset. Then check "settings".

These DVD's are mint.  Bought them at a local auction and they are in new condition, maybe never played.  This estate's CD's were also mint.  Those play in the car and my Bose just fine.  The excellent condition was what inspired us to give this player another try.  I'll go with suggestions given when DH comes home tonight.

I would try cleaning the lens. You'll need to buy a cleaning disc designed to do just that. Those cost less than $10.

Re: What are we doing wrong with our DVD player?

This is what we finally found goofing around with these suggestions this afternoon. Using a different remote originally got us nowhere so we set it up the old fashioned way, pushing buttons on the TV input and on the DVD player.  Then I took the remote and turned down the volume.  We suddenly noticed in the upper left corner Repeat Title, Repeat First Chapter, and Off.  I swear we didn't see this before.  So we moved carefully, making sure the repeat function on the volume switch was on OFF.  Thanks for all your help, without reading the suggestions I woldn't have realized there was a repeat function somewhere, even when it stared me in the face.

Interesting.  I still have and use a DVD player and I don't know if mine has that feature or not.  I'll need to get into the menu and check it out.  I do like having the feature when I stream programs.  You start where you left off and don't have to rewatch the part you've seen.
