Viewing MS Word 2010 in Word 2007

Hi, I have a quick question.

I have MS Office 2007. I received an attachment in MS Word 2010 yesterday, and Word opened, but not the document. I didn't get any error messages.

I asked the person to re-send me the document, and he said that 2007 isn't compatible with 2010. I didn't think that 2007 is so old that it wouldn't be compatible. Or is there a special download that I need?
