I hope someone can help me. Sometimes when I record a show it will record in letterbox format, black bands at the top and bottom of the screen. Other times it will record without them ( they are not programs in the letterbox format). This happened with last night’s Jimmy Fallon show, usually no black bands, last night recorded with them. Am I doing something wrong?

Try this......
On your remote look at the next to the bottom row of colorful buttons. You should see a red button w/the letter "c" in the middle. When you get a letterbox pic, press that button - letterbox gone! This will only work if the pic is HD.
This works on tv not sure of pre-recorded pics/DVR. I cannot test as I do not have a DVR.
I "think" there is somewhere in the "remote" settings to get rid of letterbox on all HD viewing. The only time I have letterbox viewing are the old movies.
If the above does not work, you should post your concerns on Verizon's forums/community and/or call their CS dept. You will need to advise them on the type of remote you have as there are several.

Not familiar with that specific DVR. Most TV sets have a setting under "Picture" where you put in a choice. Like: 4:3/Auto/16.9. They might also have these settings: Normal/Stretch/Partial zoom/Zoom/ Gray bars/Black bars. This is the TV set, not the DVR.
My Dish Network DVR also has choices of the channels recorded. Say I want to record Jimmy Fallon. I can chose either Standard Definition(SD) or High Definition(HD). Dish broadcasts in both 4.3(SD) and 16 9(HD), so in my "favorite channels" I have the same number(say channel 3), both are broadcast on that same number, 1 is SD the other is HD.
Why the same show has "letterbox" some nights and full 16.9 HD another night in 4.3(SD)or letterbox? Seems like there has to be something in your DVR/SETTINGS/PICTURE where you choose.
When I watch some hockey games that are broadcast in 4.3 SD, I adjust my TV Picture Setting to Zoom. I lose some of the picture, but the game itself is much better to watch.
A lot of things here that I have said and I would think it has to do with Picture Settings on your TV, but more likely something to do with your DVR. I would think Verizon would have a website with FAQ to help their customers, or Customer Service Reps you can call.
I know these electronics can be like a maze at times, but with so many features "built into them", that's the price one pays.
Dish Network gives their customer a "owners type manual" which explains most things. But, some of the things I listed are TV Features and Settings.

@Mz iMac my remote doesn't have any colorful buttons. I think I have a fairly new cable box with a different remote. My sister has Verizon Fios (she got it before me) and her remote is very different from mine. I could call Verizon, but now a days it isn't that easy to get to talk to someone.

@Jordan2 As previously suggested, post on their message board.

I DVR 'd Jimmy Fallon last night, it recorded without the black lines at the top and bottom of the screen, it's weird that it records with and without.

As @Mz iMac said, I will say again. What steps have you taken to change the same thing you said in your post that started this thread?

@hckynut I haven't changed anything. I'm thinking it may depend if I record on channel 4 or channel 504 ( which is high definition). I don't want to mess with the settings, I don't want to do something I won't know how to undo. I'll live with it, it doesn't happen all the time.

Good, I understand. My wife is kinda the same way when it comes to electronics, except her 24/7 cell phone. Post here again if you need some help with something. I am sure @Mz iMac, and others will try to get you going.

@hckynut I am not tech savvy, many times I have relied on posters on these forums to advise me what to do!
