VR Headset Question

I am seeing VR headsets out there for reasonable/inexpensive prices. I have a 16-year-old grand-nephew and was thinking this might be a good gift for him.

 

 But my question is - Would he use it with apps, an existing gaming system, or - ?  Do I need to be sure it's compatible with X-Box, PS, etc. or just Android/iOS?

 

I've seen ads for Google VR headsets but they're nore expensive and I know are tied into Google apps.

 

I need a quick tutorial on how they're used - purchased apps, purchased games, - ? so I'll know if there's a point to me getting them for him. And I wouldn't mind knowing if it might be fun for me too ;-)
