Thoughts on what might be wrong with my TV?

This has been going on for awhile now, and I'm thinking it's probably time for a new TV. UGH! Anyhow, usually a few times a day the picture reduces to a narrow strip accross the center of the screen, and the rest of the screen stays black. It's a fairly old TV....not a flat screen. Any thoughts? Thanks!
