My nearly 20 year old TV died today, so I get to go TV shopping. I don't have/don't plan to get HD service. I just have standard definition, digital, expanded basic cable with a receiver box. It's included with my monthly HOA fees and I'm not interested in paying for any extra services. The cable company says that any TV will work, I don't have to find a non-HD one.

It can't be any bigger than 30 inches wide (not diagonal screen size, actual width) to fit in my TV cabinet. I'd like to be able to connect my lap top to it, preferably thru Wifi, but if I have to use a cable that's fine. I have Netflix, but that's the only subscription service I'm interested in.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the TV? I'd like to spend no more than $400. I'd need to be able to see it in a store so I can measure it, so on-line shopping won't work.

Thanks!

@FrostyBabe1

30" not a popular size so don't know how many choices out there. 27" are still aplenty however. I think 32" is still the big seller.

I think every TV sold now is HD.

Most good websites, like Best Buy, will supply dimensions - height with and without stand, width, and depth.

How are you receiving Netflix now?  Just on your computer?

Do you have a wireless router?

You can get a smart TV; then, with a wireless router, you can receive Netflix wirelessly on your TV.  If your new TV isn't smart, you'll need to add a device that makes it smart, like Roku.

Yes, the Netflix is on my computer and I do have wireless internet. I guess I should have been more specific. I was looking more for "this is a great brand" or "don't bother with this brand". Best Buy does have dimensions, but all they have for width is the diagonal size of the screen, not the actual width of the TV. That's why I need to go to the store and measure it.

I think 32" could possibly work, as that 32" measurement is the diagonal measurement of the screen rather than the actual width of the TV. The actual width of my current TV is about 2 inches shorter than the diagonal width of the screen. That's why I need to go to the store and measure it. I was hoping someone would be able to say "this is a great brand" or "don't bother with this brand, it's a lemon". Thanks.

Samsung is popular and consistently gets good reviews.  I believe LG is good too.  Sharp used to be good, not sure about now.

You can find dimensions on the Best Buy site if you open the "Specifications" section.  There's a section called "Dimensions."  It has information like this (which I copied):

  • Product Height With Stand
    31 inches
  • Product Depth With Stand
    13.1 inches
  • Product Height Without Stand
    28.2 inches
  • Product Depth Without Stand
    2.1 inches
  • Product Weight With Stand
    43.4 pounds
  • Product Weight Without Stand
    37.3 pounds
  • Width
    48.6 inches

You should check with your cable company.  A few years ago, ours went to hd included - no extra charge or special box anymore.  The cable boxes have both a/v and hdmi ports, so you just pick one and hook up.

If you can use hd for the same price, might as well.  Smiley Happy

Everybody has their favorite brands.  One of mine is Sony.  Samsung is also a good one.  Toshiba is another brand with which I've done well over the years.  We have TVs in all of these brands.  The two I use the most in my house are Sonys.

My personal opinion:  In the following order...

Toshiba

Samsung

Panasonic

@ValuSkr  Thanks! I will look for that.
