Thanks for everyone's advice...as far as the lawyer mentioning this to the landlord....I would hope not but then again, who knows.

She is strapped for money so the only choice is to move, hiring a private investigator to sweep her apartment would be nice but again....she does not have the extra money to do that.

I was hoping there would be an app...there is an app for everything these days, ha!  She did download a app the would record conversations with him...which we told her not to engage him in conversation but just in case.

thanks all.

Unfortunately it is a small town...he is a 'business man' and well known. She went to a lawyer but since this person has dealings with the firm the lawyer would/could not talk with her about it.

We have advised her to take no calls, or texts from him or to let him into the apartment.  She has the police # in her phone.  She is looking for another place.

What???    That's illegal!

An owner or manager has a right to inspect the premises with 24 hours notice.

I would be less concerned about "listening bugs" and more concerned about hidden CAMERAS .... IMO, that should be her concern.

One more quick note, check the smoke detectors/alarms to make sure they're legit. There are fake smoke detectors/alarms out there (some with real smoke detecting ability too) that can hide video cameras. There should be a name/model number somewhere on the smoke detector/alarm so check that name/model number to be sure you're not being filmed unknowingly. Some even come with built in wi-fi these days so the guy (typically) monitoring you can be doing so from anyplace in the world.

Hidden camera technology has gotten very good and very cheap which is a bad combination for those who value their privacy.

@gardenman

That's an important step ... cameras can be hidden so easily in these.

The OP never mentions WHY they would think anything like this is going on. So far it just sounds to me like a bad case of being paranoid with no basis for it. Perhaps the person who is the renter needs some help,not the landlord.

@Mom2Dogs, I feel bad for your friend.  I had a bad experience when I first came to my city with a very creepy superintendent who had friends lurking around my apartment windows.  I lived on ground floor.  I was just out of university so I had no money.  I complained to the apartment building owner who did nothing.  I moved out, hand delivered they keys, got my deposit back with no issues mainly, I believe, because I worked for a law firm.  There are a lot of creeps that prey especially on young single women.

I hope she she can get out of there.  LM

@151949...the landlord has made many comments to her, some in appropriate,  as if he could hear her convesations or if she was speaking directly to him...which she has not.  Thank you for the arm chair diagnosis but she does not need help!

Very often people are not very discreet where or what they say and things get overheard.
