We have Sirius-XM in the cars. Had a radio in the house, but since getting a metal roof, can't get signal any more.

You should call CS, and ask for suggestions.

I see best buy has only one type, when you go to the sirius website, they have several, one for cars, one for homes, and you buy a subscription, is this the best way to buy it?

You have to buy a subscription to use the service. I would look over everything on their site, call CS, and them to help with your purchase. Some of the "receivers" radios are free or lower cost when buying service.

@151949 with Pandora you create stations of artists or genres that you like and then "shuffle" them for the ultimate mix.
Pandora will introduce new music based on the station and introduce new music. You "thumbs" up or down the song to add or dismiss from your station.
Some of the stations I have include: Marvin Gaye, Trisha Yearwood, Christmas (one current & one old time), 70s love songs, Meghan Trainor, Prince, The Monkees, James Taylor, Carole King, Carly Simon, Patsy Cline, Jimmy Buffett, Motown. I have so many I can't remember all of them.
I don't know of a Sirius station that is that diverse. I may be wrong though.

I don't want to have to either listen to the same music over again all the time or soend a lot of time rooting through songs to add to my playlist. You may as well play a CD.

It isn't all the same music. It is pretty neat. For any given radio station that you choose or create, new artists & songs will be played based on that one. You can give thumbs up/down on songs & based on that, more artists/songs are played for you. I regularly hear new songs & artists on my Pandora stations.

I am a PASSIONATE old time radio hobbyist, and as far as I know, in our locale, Sirius or some other satellite system is the only way to get FULL TIME old radio channels.
I also love the Christmas music stations and SOME of the other talk stations on Sirius.
DH likes several of the retro music stations.
If I could access reliable in home service to get what I want, I'd probably cut way back on he incar service, but I don't hink I'd do away with it completely.
