@goldensrbest As has already been said, just get the tv you want. There's nothing that says you have to use the SmartTV part unless you decide to. However I'm thinking it's possible that tvs have gotten to the point where many of them may well need the connection to the internet to receive updates. Whether that's only for the SmartTV part, or the actual tv, I've no idea.
Another option for "educating" your tv is with a "Smart" blu ray player. I actually have two of those (and a "dumb" 36" tv. If you have Comcast. their newer equipment allows connection to Netflix from the remote (you still have to have an Netflix account).
