Router advice (set up)

My router might be going bad. Here is my question. I have Comcast. Can I just buy a new one and replace the one I have or do I have to SET IT UP with all kinds of numbers and addresses and codes. Just curious. I have someone who is willing to come out and help me... but obviously IT WILL COST and at this point if I can I would rather do it myself.
