I may be wrong but I think if you have a smart TV, you don't need Roku.  All of the apps should be either already on your smart TV or you can add them.

Great information.   I have a question.  We have an apple TV that is several years old.  Probably Gen. 1 or 2, I really don't know.   We want to replace it with the newest model but if they are changing their whole system in 2019, we'll want the newest model if the current one won't work.   Do you happen to know about that?   Thanks.

I'm afraid not, @Bridgegal.  Given that the Apple TV device costs $100 more than the Fire or Roku sticks without offering more features I wanted, I didn't look too much further into the device itself.

As far as I know, they are not changing their whole system, they're changing their status from a content portal to content provider. They will move away from being from strictly a content portal (you use the device to access content created by others) to being a portal and a content creator (you can use the device to access content created by others and exclusive content created only for Apple TV users.) You should be able to use an older model to get both because it's not a change that requires new hardware.

Apple will be holding a new Apple Hardware event tomorrow (October 30) and announcing new iPads, computers, etc. They updated the Apple TV software in June, so be on the lookout for details after tomorrow's event. They may announce a new Apple TV unit. If they do, you can decide then whether you want the Gen 4 model (out now) or something new. If they do announce a new model and changes are minimal, you might be able to get a Gen 4 on sale after the event. (Getting the latest model in some devices is more important than others. A new computer, yes. A TV streaming device? Not so much, unless there's a big change, like HD to 4K.)

Thanks.   We needed two devices since we're retiring our old apple tv.   So, I ordered two new Roku's from Amazon.   They arrive tomorrow.   I'm sure we'll like them just fine.   The two Roku's were cheaper than one new apple tv.

I think you made a good choice, @Bridgegal, and I hope you enjoy them!

One of the things I hate about streaming devices is the text entry system. I know Roku makes a smartphone App that you can use to operate the Roku from your phone and it has a keyboard button so that you can use your phone keyboard instead of the default text entry system.
