Renewel Protection for Laptop?

My husband bought me a Dell laptop for Christmas in 2009. The Mcafee virus protection that came with the laptop will be expiring in a few days and I need to either renew with Mcafee or a new protection for my laptop. My question is how do I go about doing this? Do I need to delete my McAfee protection off my laptop? I'm confused. lol Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you much.

P. S. I have been reading alot McAfee not being good. Is there another virus protection I should use?
