Hello all my smart fellow posters, I have a question for you...
Would you buy a refurbished television set from a home shopping network?
I have been looking to buy one for myself to replace the one I had that my ex-son-in-law gave away when he helped us move. He had no right to do it but it is what it is and I can't cry over spilt milk. Please don't advise me to make him pay for it, he has no job or money.
Anyway, I would appreciate your input as my favorite shows are about to start and one has already started. I am getting anxious. Thanks to all of you in advance for your advice.

I've had very good luck buying refurbished electronics but mine have all been refurbished by the manufacturer and come with a warranty. Have you checked places like Best Buy? I recently looked there and unless you want a huge TV, their prices seemed very reasonable.

I saw refurbished TVs at a Sony store. I would have no trouble buying from them. I am pretty sure the price included a warranty.
The only thing I bought refurbished was a vacuum from Hoover. It was a great price and they really did a nice job. If you did not know it was refurbished, you really would have thought it was new.
Does the shopping channel offer a warranty? Are they giving you a good amount off? That it is worth getting a refurbish? How much would a new one be?

I've bought lots of refurbished stuff and never had a problem. With that said however, modern HDTV prices have largely crashed to the point where it's probably not necessary to spend a lot to get a really good HDTV with lots of features at a very low price. I spent $399 for a 55" Amazon Fire TV and there were multiple options at and around that price point when I bought it. I'm not sure the savings would be worth the risk with an HDTV. The 32" sets can be found for a tick over $100 these days and 40"-42" sets can be found for around $200. Now these are typically lesser known brands, but in my experience they function as well as, if not better than, the name brand sets.

I agree with gardenman, prices for new TVs is so low, I'd buy new.

I would NOT buy a refurbished television. You can get great pricing on a brand new one at Costco or Best Buy. A year ago, I bought a used 55" Sony that my friend was selling. It was only about 2 years old. Almost as soon as I got it home, the picture died. I paid a repair man $150 to fix it. It worked for about 6 months, then it died again. I ended up buying a new one at Costco -- and it came with a two-year warranty. BUY NEW!!

TVS are cheap enough- get a new one. Amazon has great prices on LG for example, if you have Prime free s&h.

Instead of refurbished, I'd probably look for a used TV. People that are sizing up or buying the biggest and newest next thing are getting rid of their used stuff. In my area there's a website we can go to in order to sell and buy. I just looked and there are 829 TV's listed for sale.

Yes, a warranty is included. The discount is about 15% and looking at the same set elsewhere a new one would be quite a bit more than their asking price. All and all I think it is a good deal and if it holds up for two years I wouldn't be upset. $159 for a 32 inch is not bad and there was a Samsung for $200 which I would go for because it is a name brand I am familiar with. Thanks for your input, appreciate it.

I just looked at a Best Buy web page and couldn't believe how low prices are for a new TV. Is it because they are trying to unload them to make room for the newer models? I am now thinking I can afford a new one seeing as to how low the prices are. Thanks to all of you for your input.
