Oh I'm so glad I came across this. Thank you! I have a 10 year old Win 7 pc (works great) and I was trying to decide between a Chromebook and a pc when Win 7 updates end in 2020.  Now I have my answer.

@Deree ,

Please don't let that CB 'end-of-life' policy steer you away from buying one. CBs are really amazing. They are virtually maintenance-free and are easy to use. When you think about it, a Windows pc requires regular updates and also updated security software. These things usually become obsolete in about the same time a CB would come to the end of it's life. So if you decide to buy a CB then just make sure it has a long-dated end-of-life date on it. I love my CB and plan on buying another one soon.

You are spot on.... nothing is worse to me then a dreaded windows device. when I think of all the horror of updating from the miserable windows 8 to 8.1 to windows 10. If I could get more then four years out of any device I will stick with it. and who knows if Cb's continue to sell well maybe there will be a newer operating system something cloud based  would be nice.Woman Wink

I have had six computers in 10 years. My Window 7 machine is nearly 9.I will recycle it. I usually keep my boxes for 4 years. I still have four.

An EOL of 5 years is great. I know with pure Android devices the processor maker decides  how many updates a phone or tablet will receive.You can run a flag ship phone for four years.Three with updates one year without. By the fourth apps maybe hard to install. My phone will have to be replaced.

If I were buying a CB, I would want it to be stable running regular apps from the Google play Store. You can find this information online. Please decide which CB you want before going to a store.

My question is about the 'end of life' policy. So when my chromebook gets to be 5-yo then the Chrome OS no longer will update...that part I understand. Question is:   since the OS won't update when it gets 5 yo, does that mean my chromebook becomes vulnerable to cyber attacks or hacks if I continue to use it? ...or does the chromebook become un-usable when it gets that old?

ETA- It's 6.5 years, not 5 for updates to end...and this is not consistent from brand to brand as well as models. It's confusing to say the least.

I have watched u tube videos and went on line to find out that it is not the date you brought it but, when the device was manufactured and ready for selling. In other words I have a old Asus which was brought out in 2016 I brought it in 2017 and it has a life expendency of three more years with updates But, there are things I can do to expand the life of it and I will do more research to find out more and let people know. And yes if Chrome books do not update the OS of course it will have problems with applications which used to work and will not work after that and of course virus support will be no more. I just got a update so I am good for a little while with my device. I agree very confusing and a big kick in the butt for us Chrome book users.Hoping that they will get there act together soon or before this happens.
