Question about current Nooks and Kindles

My friend loaned me her Kindle about a year ago, an older model. What I didn't like was the fact the screen kept going off when I set it down and I had to tap it to get it back on. Sounds minor, but it drove me nuts. I know its to save the battery, but is there some setting that lets it stay on for a longer period of time on the newer models?
