Question about MP3 player issue?

Hi, I have a question. My husbands 2 yr old MP3 player (Sansa) was working fine yesterday, and today it died. Well we plugged it into the computer to try to charge it, and it a message came up that states the device is not recognized. So it said to try again which we did (10 times). We still get the same message. He wants to trash it. I wanted to know if you think if we find the disc that came with it, and reload the software do you think it will work OR is there any other answer to this problem besides trashing it? Thanks.
