Question about Laptop Processors

I've been reading online and trying to learn about different processors - I am seeing information about i3, i5 and i7. Do these letters/numbers mean that these processors are faster and say any other type of processor? I have a netbook Acer that I bought in 2009 and it has an Intel Atom processor. Are these new 'i' ones faster?
