Question about AMD Ryzen 7 processor

[ Edited ]

I recently bought the HP Pavilion X360 convertible laptop from Best Buy. Like QVC, they are giving people until January to return items. I like this convertible, but when the Q presented their latest HP TSV, I found myself interested in that one as well. I ordered the 15" model using the advanced order option deliberately to give me time to do some research concerning the processor, and if I choose, to cancel.

My convertible has a 10th generation I5 processor, and the Q one has an AMD Ryzen 7. I know both are good choices, but I've never had AMD before. Would really appreciate opinions about the two and how they compare to each other. I just do regular stuff on computers like emailing, watching videos, spreadsheets, etc.--no serious gaming. My guess is that either one would work out fine for me, but wanted to get opinions. Thanks!

I would keep the HP machine from Best Buy. Is this computer the 14" 360 X2? Please read the reviews and let the online community help your decide. Best Buy customers are tech savvy.

The QVC product has a slower hard drive, and not the best display. You should be able to find reviews online with the model number.

I really did not answer your question about processors.

A computer is the sum of all its components.

I don't know about that particular processor but, I've owned computers with AMD and they ran fine.  I am a gamer, not the type teenagers play, and it handled everything fine.  I also do video and photo editing and I had no lag or delay.  As posted, read current reviews and see what people are saying.

Re: Question about AMD Ryzen 7 processor

There's not really a huge difference between CPU's these days. Both AMD and Intel flip-flop over value and performance, with AMD having the lead right now in both categories, but in typical use, you'll see very little difference in performance. One will outperform in benchmarks, but for normal tasks, the difference will be minimal. When I build computers I tend to use AMD as I prefer getting a good value over unnoticeable performance boost, but these days AMD gives you both value and performance. Their newest Threadripper isn't really a "value" CPU, retailing at $1999, but it's a performance beast.

Re: Question about AMD Ryzen 7 processor

Thanks everyone for responding. As suggested, I've read the reviews for the Best Buy model, which are favorable, but the Q model is too new to have any reviews yet. Since my order isn't to be shipped until Dec. 10, there should be plenty to read by that time.

The differences between the two laptops aren't that important to me--I'd be happy either way. For instance, the BB one has a SSD, fingerprint reader, better resolution, and is a convertible, but has less storage and is slighty smaller. The Q one has an optical drive. As I said, none of these differences really matter to me; they'd both be good choices. That's why I focused on the processor in each. I thought if one was clearly better than the other then I'd select that one. Apparently, though, there's no clear winner. I'm leaning towards the BB one, but who knows.

@qualityshopper

HP sells the Pavillion with the AMD processor on their site. You should be able to find reviews with a model number.

I like reading expert and customer reviews.

In a few weeks, you will be able to run the two laptops side by side and keep your favorite.
