I know! @software Then after I got a new PC, my printer wasn't compatible with the new PC!
Nothing was wrong with that old printer.
But I had to replace that, too.![]()

My Dell desktop must be 12 yrs old - had to replace the monitor (screen) when it went blank blue. Had it upgraded to windows 10 - hated it at first and still can't do photos to send cuz it's so complicated. Own 3 cameras and w/windows 10 I just gave up. I've never loved #10 but I'm stuck with it and Dell is still working okay. You may hate the new and be sorry you junked the old.
@fthunt oh, I am sure that I will regret the new over the old worn in and easy old computer....
BUT>>>, nothing lasts forever and upgrading will make the future of computing better for safety on the internet and for getting the important upgrades and fixes that our old system is no longer getting. There were some websites that I could not go to because our browser was too old....

We have both Mac and PC at our house. It seems every time you upgrade something, it breaks something else you use. That's why I haven't tried upgrading to the Mojave on my Mac. My husband's computer doesn't have enough memory to even use Sierra which is what I am running. So, it's nothing about the computer, but the software that makes the computer obsolete. You also have to be careful about updating software to make sure your peripherals (aka printers, etc.) will still be compatible with the update. A lot of printers will upgrade for Windows but drag their feet on Mac.
The reason I ended up buying a Windows machine: I originally was running both Mac and Windows on my Mac using Parallels software. When I updated my Mac software it broke my Parallels, and I lost everything I had there. I could upgrade my Paralells ($), but I decided just to buy a cheap Windows 7 machine. I really only run 3 programs on it. One of them is native to XP, so no need to be concerned with Windows 10. The second is a pattern drafting software and I checked with them and they said they had no plans to abandon Windows 7. The other is software for putting Hymns on the big screen for church. I just told our choir director if they update to a version that requires 10 they'll need to find someone else to do the hymns for them.
My husband upgraded his to 10 and hated it.
On another note, devices are another thing. Those seem to be planned obsolesence. I know Android is. When you get a new device, it will only update the software to a certain level and then it just stops updating even if your device is capable of running it. My daughter's fiance broke into (called rooting) my tablet and updated it to the latest Android version a couple of years ago. Now, my Android phone is no longer running some of my apps, so I may get him to try rooting it too. The one thing you have to remember when doing that is you need to be prepared to buy a new device in case it turns into a brick.

My HP PC is 10 years old and still running Windows 7. It doesn't show signs of dying any day soon. Do I really need to get a new PC with Windows 10? Will the PC still be safe when it comes to paying bills on line?

Sometimes you have to upgrade because the other electronics you are using, printer, scanner etc.will no longer work with the older computer.
My new MacBook Air is not compatable with my older printer at home....so I have to print using the old MacBook, which is no longer upgradable but will print to the older printer....always something!!

Using newer technology will provide improved levels of security. In other words, old software is often times not made to be updated with the new updates and this means that leaves your system vulnerable to security breaches. @twocatlou

Windows 7 will stop getting Window updates in January 2020. You have time to look for a computer of your choice.

I believe consumers are pushed to replace items early. My desktop and 2 laptops, all Dells, are each 6 years old, originally Win 7's upgraded to Win 10, and still going strong. As long as they have the capability to do what I need them to do, I'm happy.
