I'm looking to get a no contract phone that I either prepay up front or go with a carrier that will only cost me $35-$40 a month. This may be a dumb question but how do you go about setting up your phone? I want to keep my number and know you can do that. But do I cancel my phone with my present carrier and then set up the new phone or the other way around?TIA

Setting up with the new no-contract provider & porting your old number over will automatically cancel your contract with your present provider.
If you cancel with your current provider first you may not be able to keep your old phone number.
