Pop-ups?

Hi

I have a question I sure hope someone can answer for me. We have an Acer laptop with Windows 7. We get a good amount of pop-up windows telling us we need to up-date programs. The messages come from Adobe and Windows 7 the most. Apart of updating they want permission to change some programs in our computer, rename file folders, etc. Should we do what these pop-ups are telling us.....are they that important? They always say they are free. These really concern me since I don't know that much about the insides of a computer!

I sure could use some up!
