Re: Ordered new HP and it came with no operating system

I can't get past the part that there was no disc drive but I just Googled it and sure enough most modern day laptops don't include them. Everything is in the cloud. I hope there's nobody out there that is still on dial-up and wants a new laptop.

Re: Ordered new HP and it came with no operating system

"Disc drive" is iffy nomenclature these days. Nearly every computer now relies on some form of solid-state memory. An SSD, M.2 drive, etc., is the norm these days and has been for a few years now. Laptops, especially Apple Macs, tend to have the memory soldered to the motherboard, while other brands rely on replaceable/upgradeable forms like M.2 drives.

Consumers are used to talking/hearing about "disc drives" so some manufacturers still refer to their SSD as a disc drive, but no disc is involved in most modern computers. Nearly everything is solid state these days. SSDs are faster, more reliable (somewhat), and pretty darn cheap. (Though the prices are climbing rapidly with the AI farms buying up everything at any price. Memory prices have largely quadrupled in the past few months.)

I have a Mac Air.  No disc drive.  Had an old iMac.  No disc drive.  I think disc drives are obsolete.  Haven't see one in years.  You download whatever you need from the source's website., and ONLY from the source's website for safety and security.

I have an external DVD/CD drive connected to my iMac.  There are external drives still for sale if anyone has a need for one.

@MKR14       I cannot even fathom a computer that didn't have an operating system installed.

Thanks Estellee .

I was just looking at Best Buys and thinking of ordering one there. Thanks for the advice.

I saw the same error that I "had online" as someone else got the error when they opened their new computer also. It said Boot Device not found. Then there was a UPC code under the message to scan for help that would not scan. So I packaged it back up and brought it back to Walmart where I ordered it. Never had any problems with electronics from Walmart. Even the electronics Manager had not seen that. I just couldn't get by the first screen. I was disappointed as it was a beautiful laptop.

I posted the problem in Estelle's post.

UPDATE:

This is the error on my laptop when I booted it up.

What is happening
  • No OS found: Your laptop's hardware is functional, but it can't find any software to run when it turns on.
  • Boot failure: This is a "boot failure" error, meaning the computer can't complete its boot-up sequence.
  • Possible causes:
    • The hard drive or SSD has failed or is defective.
    • The existing OS has become corrupted, and its boot files are damaged.
    • A recent update may have caused the issue.
  • All I did was turn it on.

Re: Ordered new HP and it came with no operating system

"Boot Device Not Found" would imply the M.2 drive became unseated. If the box was still factory sealed, it likely came loose during shipping/handling at some point. If the box had been opened, someone might have stolen the M.2 drive.

In general, the M.2 drive is held in place by a single small screw or a locking lever. On some/most desktop motherboards, there's a heatsink that screws down on top of the M.2 drive, further helping lock it into place, but most laptops don't use that approach. That will be a very fast fix for the folks at HP. Just open the case, reinsert the M.2 drive, and close the case back up. Problem solved.

@MKR14  Buy directly from the manufacturer.
