Nook or Kindle? Differences/Similarities?

Why should I buy one over the other? Do both have wifi capabilities?

He is wanting an Ipad, but we don't want to spend 500$ right now. He wants the Ipad for the internet connectivity. I guess he feels the screen on the iPhone is too small.

Should we just wait til we want to spend the 500$.
