Which model iMac do you currently have?
How much storage space (HD) do you have?
How much storage space (HD) do you have left?
Which OS is currently installed?

@Mz iMac This computer is killing me. I have to force quit applications. It takes forever to open mail, iTunes, photos. And when I open photos it’s always downloading them. This computer is 10 years old, I have not added any new pics.
Mac OS High Sierra
10.13.6
Storage 999.35 GB
I have 500.54 GB on it
Inhope this is the info you wanted. I am not up on these things. Thanks for the interest.

@Mz iMac I see there is an update for 10.14.3 my computer will not download it. it says this Mac version will not support it. i guess its just too outdated.

You apparently have enough HD space. I forgot to also ask if your RAM is maxed out. You can check by going to Apple>About this Mac>Memory.
"when I open photos it’s always downloading them."
Never heard of that one happening. That's a new one on me. The only thing I can think of is that you may have a corrupted preference.plist file. To check....
Finder>Library>Preferences>com.apple.Photo.plist
Drag plist file to the trash, restart your computer. If your Photo app acts correctly, empty the trash. A new plist file will be recreated.
You should post about your issue in Apple's Photo forum if trashing the plist file does not work.
"I see there is an update for 10.14.3 my computer will not download it."
It's actually an upgrade not an update since you are going from 1 OS to another (new one). If your comp is telling you the upgrade is not compatible then it isn't. You can double check by going on Apple's site & check out Mojava's system requirements.
EDIT: I rarely recommend software on Q's site because I do not know everyone's (Mac users) level of experience. Far too many "I am not comp savy" users here and/or users who do not take the time to "learn" about using an expensive piece of hardware. That being said.......
Every 6 months or so, I use this FREE app called Onyx to keep all my Macs in tip top shape. This app does all the work for you & cuts the time 1/2 or less if doing manually. I only use the "maintenance" tab since my iMac is only 2 yrs old. Suggest that you give Onyx a try. All the other stuff that app offers, you can check out at your leisure and/or whatever your comfort level is.
The above are my personal maintenance settings.

@Mz iMac Thank you so much for this info. I will check the corrupted file in photos. I will also check the update. I am very interested in that app. Going to check it out now. Thank you for the info. I appreciate it very much.
