New MacBook Pro

[ Edited ]

I finally decided it's time to get a new computer.  It was on sale at Best Buy for $200.00 off and I bought it.  I got a MacBook Pro 13 inch in the slate grey and I do like it.  I had one problem, no sound and after trying everything I know, I called Apple support.  We had to reset the memory, something I've never heard of, by pressing the option, command, P and R key at the same time while the computer was booting up.  It worked.  While I was on the phone, I registered it.

My RA can be so painful, especially in my hands, I needed a lighter computer.  I don't like an iPad for a variety of reasons and my 15 inch MacBook Pro's Retina Display is getting much worse so, I decided to try a smaller MacBook.  I really like it.  For those who need a fully functiong computer but want something light, try a MacBook Pro 13 inch.

How exciting to get a new computer and especially a MacBook Pro.  I hope you love yours as much as I do mine.  I too have the 13" screen, and have had it for a few years and it still runs like a champ.  Congratulations on a great purchase, enjoy!  Happy Thanksgiving

Thanks for sharing the resetting memory experience. I never heard of it before either and I hope my memory will be able to recall this tip if I ever run into a similar problem. I have had a MacBook Air a little over a year and I love it.

Enjoy your new MacBook Pro!

@glb613 , nice!  You take such good care of your electronics.  I am sure you will enjoy your new MacBook.  I have the 13" and I love that size.

Prior to MacBook Pro, I had a 17" HP.  I bought it because DH was newly retired and he found smaller too small.  I was so glad to get rid of that. Way too cumbersome.

Enjoy!  LM

I'm not one to buy extended warranties but, I think I'll get Apple Care.  I had it on my iMac since it was my first Mac computer and thought I'd need tech support.  Both of my Macs had hardware issues but, they occurred after the extended warranty expired.  With the past problems with the Retina display deteriorating, I think I will.  In all fairness, I bought both of my Macs in late 2012 and 2013 so, I got my money's worth out of both of them.  BTW, I really like the darker slate grey finish.

Congratulations on your Macbook. I just got a brand new Macbook Pro 15.6" to replace the one I have from 2014. There isn't anything wrong with the 2014 one other than the screen being so messed up -- as was the case with the older Macbooks. The memory is full, but I'm going to start taking things off of it. I read about a way to clean the screen too to get some of that splotchy stuff off of it....baby wipes. I'm going to try it. I totally LOVE my new Macbook Pro. I bought a screen protector for it. Hope it helps.

Definitely get the Apple Care. I don't typically recommend extended warranties, but Apple's been doing some strange stuff with their cooling and electrical design in recent years that tends to make slightly older Macbooks prone to failure in catastrophic ways. They've redesigned the cooling in the new Macbook Pros but redesigned doesn't always mean better design.

Louis Rossman has a YouTube channel where he shows people how to repair Apple computers, and what Apple and their Genius Bar techs do and charge are pretty interesting. Unlike a Windows PC, you can't just buy replacement components for many Apple products and you must get them serviced by Apple. Now Apple swears (at least to Congress) that they lose money on their repair service, but that seems unlikely unless they're doing some very creative bookkeeping.

The new Macbook pros have a new hinge design,  a new keyboard, and a new cooling system. Given Apple's recent history, it's likely at least one of those new designs won't perform as expected and will cause untold trouble for users. An extended warranty is pretty much a must-have if you're buying Apple products these days.

I've been watching some of the unboxing and early reviews of the new 16" Macbook Pros and the price tags are astounding to me. Six and seven thousand dollars-plus for a fully-featured laptop is kind of mind-numbing to me. I could build an absolute beast of a desktop computer for that kind of money. Kudos to Apple for finding people willing to pay that kind of money for a computer, but I'm definitely not one of those people.

I read your post and ordered it online.  I know Apple computers are expensive but, I think they are worth it.  I've been using an older windows computer for an organization where I volunteer and it reminds me why I switched.

Congrats!  I downsized to the 13" a few years ago and mostly love the smaller size.  I still try not to travel with it though.  The only place we ever go on vacation is skiing, and I have had problems wiith battery bloat in the past at higer elevations.  Didn't affect the computer except that I had to remove the battery and keep it plugged in all the time to use it.  Not exactly convenient.  The only time I miss the larger size is when I have multiple windows up which I often do when I'm working on genealogy.
